Why has Ngatea Primary gone down this path?
Students, staff and BOT are working towards the intent of the charter that was adopted by the 2011 community.
"The school encourages innovation in inquiry and learning to meet the current and future needs of students. The school responds creatively to future challenges and takes risks to ensure the primacy of student learning"
Ngatea Primary School Charter - Vision Statement
-Todays students have all been born into the era of computers, video games, email, internet and mobile phones.. These technologies have always been a part of their lives. They are as comfortable with these technologies as previous generations were with radio and television.
Personalised Learning
Students need to become positive, resourceful and motivated learners who are able to self-manage their learning. Thus personalised learning through 1:1 computing enhances:
- Self-management & ownership of own learning;
- Greater personal choice to meet needs, interest and abilities;
- Learning opportunities: class may received the same design brief, but students can access information to personalise their learning.
- A digital environment encourages student led learning far more than an environment that is teacher led, or in the case of text books.
- Easy access to online tutorials to further support their learning rather than relying on teacher support only.
Collaboration
Interaction and sharing between student-home-teacher is one of the most powerful ways to further develop learning:
- Ease of co-constructing the learning 1:1 and in groups;
- Timely & Effective feedback from home, teacher and peers;
- Collaboration can be anytime, anyhow and from anywhere with immediate responses;
Anyhow, Anytime & Anywhere
The electronic media does not restrain collaboration, this allowing students to explore and develop their learning
- Work can be access from anywhere and anytime outside the classroom;
- There are multiple options for learning formats. e.g. video, document, audio, animation, blogs, forums
- Have instant access to information and communication
- Not reliant on the teacher to supply the knowledge
- Parents can have open access to students learning and portfolios
- Authentic learning opportunities & audiences
Google Drive
Students will be accessing all of their learning in the 'cloud' on a free educational resource knows as Google drive. Students will have all the software found in Microsoft Office plus many more additional programs and extensions to support their learning.
Student Achievement
Research on implementing 1:1 computing from New Zealand, Australia, USA and the UK supports the improvement of student learning outcomes.
- Huge increase in students participation and engagement in their own learning.
- Research further supports the increase in literacy skills of students, particularly boys.,
- Makes editing of writing easy - students do not have to rewrite large parts of text when editing or paraphrasing.
- Increases attendance rates.
How will the school balance 'pencil & paper" with their digital devices?
Continuation of written tasks (pen & paper)
- Formal handwriting
- Mathematics
- Reading programmes
- The Arts
What will happen when my child goes to College?
Hauraki Planes College does have a BYOD programme underway and therefore, students will be able to use their own devices.
How will the digital device's be kept safe?
We are into our third year now, and have never had a device stolen, or lost.
- The devices are to be used by their owner only
- To be locked in a cupboard during breaks, and after school if needed
- Parents are required to purchase a protection case, and students carry them home after school
- The school will re-image the device regularly to protect the hard drive from overloading.
Do I have to buy additional software?
No. All softwares are web-based. Students will not need to download anything.
Can I bring an existing digital device?
No. We have learnt that this causes problems. Because the devices need to be managed by our eLearning facilitator the devices need to be the same. This also reduces the amount of viruses that multiple platforms can create.
- Students can bring their mobile devices to school.
Internet safety at school? At home?
We have two levels of internet security at school. This filters out 99.9% of objectionable content. Our students are also educated about cyber-safety, and our school's high exceptions for appropriate internet use. We run a cyber-safety session for parents at the start of every year. If you are interested please contact the office.
Am I able to apply for assistance from WINZ?
Yes. Please discuss this with your local WINZ office.
Will the school run parent's training sessions?
Yes, if there is a demand for it.
